While backpacking in Ecuador, I fell in love with the could forest of Mindo, and of course, the Amazon rainforest. What enthralled me most about these regions, was the sheer number and diversity of butterflies. They were everywhere. All the time. I learned there are thousands of species of butterflies in Ecuador. I knew when I got home this is what I wanted to paint. This collection is titled “Mariposas” which means butterflies in Spanish. The wings are painted with thick swatches of bright oil paint to represent the microscopic scales you would see looking at a butterfly wing under a microscope. These scales come together to form the butterflies wing pattern in an impressionistic way.
